Bi Jade (Jasper)

Jasper (Bi Jade) is a variety of nephrite jade known for its rich green tones and naturally opaque to semi-translucent appearance. Often referred to simply as “jade” in the market, this material is valued for its earthy character and distinctive mineral patterns.

Unlike traditional high-transparency jadeite, Jasper (Bi Jade) contains a higher proportion of mineral inclusions—such as iron oxides and clay particles—which can make up over 20% of its composition. These inclusions give each piece a unique texture, often displaying natural banding, speckles, or clustered formations.

This type of jade is found in several regions around the world, including Xinjiang, Russia, Canada, New Zealand, and California. Variations from different origins may show subtle differences in colour, density, and pattern, adding to its collectible appeal.

Green Jasper is especially recognised for its deep, spinach-like green colour and organic look. It has long been associated with qualities such as protection, grounding, balance, and emotional calm, making it a meaningful choice for everyday jewellery.

As a form of nephrite, Jasper (Bi Jade) has a Mohs hardness of approximately 6.5 to 7, offering good durability for jewellery and carvings. Its smooth surface and soft, waxy lustre are characteristic of high-quality nephrite materials.

At Helen Grade A Jade, we carefully select Jasper pieces for their natural beauty and craftsmanship, transforming them into timeless jewellery that blends tradition with modern design.
